My lyrics are bottomless - geeking out over lyrics
Sat Jan 09, 2010 1:08 pm
First I thought about starting a thread similar to [url=http:
//fotcmb.
com/viewtopic.
php?f=12&
t=2179&
sid=38d195adf49a0a822a07cb22300d0376&
start=0:uqstu5a7]muchos pendejos lyrics (too many dicks in spanish)[/url:uqstu5a7] (nice job there) but dedicated to Doggy Bounce (I feel obliged to write something about it :;
): ).
Then I thought (after Sarah's spur)
"
Why don'
t we have one place to talk about their lyrics in general?"
[/align:uqstu5a7]
I like watching how Carol Brown or I Told I Was Freaky have been changed since their shows in 2008, comparing the lyrics or just analyzing them. For example, I remember seeing 's works before but I didn't remember the artist's name and I had to check what Bret meant by singing in Inner City Pressure about losing perspective.
Do you have your favourite lines? Why are they your favourites? Or you've noticed something new, since the lyrics are bottomless. Please, share with others . Or there are lyrics that haven't been published (like Rock Beat ) and it would be great to know them. Sometimes it's difficult to me to understand some words or phrases, so I guess it'll be the place for me to ask questions about them .
So, let's put all our love to witticisms, polite, obscene, potent or sissy rhymes and even sexist lyrics here.
Will you be constructive with your feedback?

Generally, the Polish version is a faithful translation of the English one (or it's the other way round ) and as you can see, it's a bit shorter. When I first heard it on the show I thought they're singing in Serbian or Slovakian . It took me some time to recognize my native language . Hence I suspect that it's been sung by a non-Polish person or someone who's Polish but haven't been to Poland for a long time. So, here are my comments :
* Polish dogs bark ‘
hau, hau’
(pron. how how)
** I hear ‘
po’
- eng. 'on' instead of ‘
do’
- 'to'. If they do sing 'po' then it should be 'parkiecie' (yes, declinations... Ugh... " title="" border="0"/>)
'ruszaj tył
kiem po parkiecie' - move your booty on/around the dance floor
'ruszaj tył
kiem do parkietu' - go to the dance floor on your booty
I know it's mostly the parody of Los Del Rio's La Macarena video but I think it's hilarious that I can find some similarities to Polish disco polo music (not a fan).
This song is about spotted / polka dot panties . It's about 20 years old.
[flash=350,287:ywf6xzak]https://www.youtube.com/v/ygm3Qy4Jpd4&hl=en&fs=1[/flash:ywf6xzak]
May I add that I wasn't expecting to hear Polish on the show and I'm grateful to them and excited that they know Poland exist .

This is awesome, Sylvia
I love the Polish version of Doggy Bounce, the video is just extra hilarious!
Also, singing the Polish version is harder than I thought it looked...

Thank you!
Shall I write the phonetic transcription ? That would be a challenge ;

(to start this thread rolling )
Are there any lyrics that you didn't quite appreciate on first listen? Those ones are always the best, when it's about third time around and you go "
...OH! "
For me, I never quite appreciated:
"
when you're unemployed, there's no vacation"
and it really is subtle genius.

I after the first listening on the show. This subtle genius made me to fall in love with them . Inner City Pressure was my favourite song until I got to Sally Returns and Business Time (..."
making love... making love for two... making love for two minutes "
).
My other fave is Hotties but I didn't get why they are singing about Cuba until I found out about Cuba Street in Wellington . In one of the interviews the interviewer said that she saw Jemiane loitering on Cuba Street .

It took me a while to find that out too!
But my little Cuban step sister appreciates that song because it mentions 'Cuba' She may not speak any english, but she can still love Flight of the Conchords!
I think she has even started watching the spanish versions on youtube

I completely agree with this. That Inner City Pressure lyric is one of my favorites. But my all time favorite is from A Kiss Is Not A Contract: "
They call it a fly, because it takes you up to heaven (ooh oooohhhh)"
So good.

She may like them even more when she sees them wearing Cuba sweatshirts:

Dirty and funny. This must have been written by Jemaine .

*cough* *points to AV + screen name* *cough*
i like that song not only because of the Cuba reference, but because it really showcases Jemaine's vocal talents
i love the incongruous image of "
sweet susie sue...playing a tuba"
(a love interest playing, of all things, a large, unwieldy, bulbous instrument) as well as the line, "
liar liar my pants are on fire!"
because it's so random and because it reminds me of one of my favorite bits from "
The Tick"
[flash=350,287:02g02qzi]https://www.youtube.com/v/Cfw1Qqdc2ww&hl=en&fs=1[/flash:02g02qzi]
(see 7:37- 8:00)
where it's evident the writers just wanted to set up a scene where they could use that line in the most odd way possible
what a great thread idea - this gives me something to think about while i'm listening to their songs

this thread can be for this purpose as well ;
). If I'm not sure, I check on various websites like or WTF! forum but some live versions are not so clear or they change, so we can discuss it here.

I think Hotties is the only song where they mention their name (apart from H vs R :
F o the C

"
Stana"
has some of the most clever lyrics I've ever heard. Anyone who doubts their creative genius should listen to that one. I've played it for a few FotC doubters, and there's nothing they can say. It's perfect.
The long songs (Jenny, Bus Drivers Song) are the ones that really show what they're capable of, I think.

It bugged me because the whole fake censoring concept was something we toyed around with in junior high.
But I like it now. I think it's because the live censoring requires skill, so I'm always impressed when Bret pulls it off (so well!). The charm is in the live version.

"
The only boobs I see tonight will be made of origami."
Because...what the hell? XD
And as Chrissy and I geeked out over the Spanish versions a while ago, I love those, too. Some of them are like "
...wait, what?"
but the majority of them are very well translated/adjusted for Spanish-speaking folks.
I'll listen and find examples later.
And some English ones as well.

i do a lot of "
wait... what?"
when i listen to the spanish versions (i really need to work harder on practicing my spanish :-[) but the words usually sink in and i "
get"
the translation, and then proceed to crack up over the changes
i'm glad i'm not the only one
WORD.
I particularly like the bit where Stana and Anats become lovers... "
what would you do if you met you? [would you] touch your other self the way that you touch yourself except without the shame, without the guilt of thinking 'shouldn't i be doing some work?'"
i just LOVE that they went *there*
as nik said, that whole damn song is just chockablock with witticisms and comic genius.
