okay, i don't know if i'm way behind the times on this one, but i had a realization today that hit me like a ton of bricks: "
frodo, don't wear the ring"
is totally a led zeppelin parody! i hope i'm not the only one who didn't know this before now, 'cause otherwise i'll feel silly <img src=" title="Razz" border="0"/> but i was in the car and i heard this song on the radio, and as soon as it began i knew, because at first i thought it was frodo and i was like "
OMG FRODO'S ON THE RADIO!"

[flash=350,287:98dh8bk0]https://www.youtube.com/v/vSZcTs00ZGg&hl=en&fs=1[/flash:98dh8bk0]

and then when i figured out that frodo was a parody of this one, i realized that led zep was always singing about lotr, and i couldn't believe i hadn't realized it before. please tell me i'm not the only one....? haha

can i just say, i am so 'ucking impressed by the guys' ability to parody a song so perfectly that it both sounds a lot like the original AND fools listeners by being such a well-written, original song? i bow before their musical prowess... ^O^

Thank god for this topic! I was thinking about this the other day.

I was trying to figure out why "
Song for Sally"
sounded so familiar. And then it hit me.

The following is a favourite kiwi song by an iconic kiwi called Dave Dobbyn, from the footrot flats movie which is a kiwi gem.

Do you hear it, or is it just me?

WOW! I'd never heard this song before! I'm amazed that it took this long for one of us to figure it out. Good catch, Caik! <img src=" title="Very Happy" border="0"/>

lol this song is so bad i couldn't listen all the way through! no offense if you like it, pukeko! but yeah, it seems like it's in the same genre as song for sally. i have memories of a song that's even more similar that also has a similar video, but i haven't put enough thought or effort into digging up that other song (mainly because i know it's bad, unlike led zep, haha). i could be manufacturing that memory or conflating more than one song in my head, but i feel like there's a song out there that's even closer. anyone know what it is off the top of their head?

"
Song For Sally"
seems pretty similar to that cringe-worthy ditty, "
The Girl is Mine"
by Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson, yis? Is that what you were thinking of, Caik?

On reflection yeah, its not the greatest. I think i love it for nostalgic reasons more than anything. I guess it was the general 80s-ness cheese sound that sounded so similar

lol wow, this is a bad one, too (paulie! what were you thinking?!). i would not be surprised if this was part of the inspiration, too, but it's still not what i'm thinking of. i actually have a more vivid memory of a video that looked like song for sally (with the fog, the piano, the mood lighting, etc.) than i do for the actual song. but i'm also thinking of a song that has that triplet-y, ballad-y piano accompaniment...i think i may be making it up, or thinking of a genre more than a specific song <img src=" title="Razz" border="0"/> oh well, if i can't think of it now, that just means that it'll make me happy when/if it ever hits me out of the blue like frodo did ;<br />D

I think I may be one of the few who knew the parody link to Led Zep hahaha!
Only because my friend and I were in the middle of writing a Led Zep/LOTR parody "
Hyper Ballad"
when, suddenly, we watched "
The Actor"
episode and heard "
Frodo."
Oh, we were a bit heartbroken because we thought we were being clever :Smile

And "
Song for Sally"
I think is based on something else...but I can't remember the name or artist. I remember channel surfing late one night and stumbled on one of those informercials on music compilation. They played a video SHOT EXACTLY like the sequence in the show, but I can't remember any important information on it Sad

I would laugh my ass off if they did a Parody of "
Safety Dance."
Indeed, I would.

I'd love for them do a dead-on parody of "
Purple Rain,"
but Prince would definitely definitely definitely sue their asses. <img src=" title="Surprised" border="0"/>

EVEN BETTER: A parody of this...

[flash=350,287:0qde90vi]https://www.youtube.com/v/7ULZuCK_fgo&hl=en&fs=1[/flash:0qde90vi]

... would be better. Maybe not for the guy-Flighties, but the gal-Flighties would be eternally (!) grateful. <img src=" title="Razz" border="0"/>

Trying to figure out the video(s) which may have inspired "
Sally's Song"
is quite frustrating for me, as I feel like I KNOW I've seen the vid they're pulling from, but can't drag it out of the quagmire that is my brain right now.

At any rate, it DOES remind me of some Hall and Oates vids, esp. this one. And, even if they didn't use this particular vid for inspiration, I think spreading H&O tunes around is like promoting world peace... or saving the whales... okay, maybe it's just about reveling in cheesy 80s pop.

enjoy Smile

no no, sorry to confuse. that particular song isn't about lotr, but led zeppelin did a bunch of songs about lotr, most notably "
ramble on."
check it out:

i'm so glad you remember a video exactly like song for sally, roxy! that makes me even more confident that i'm not just making up the memory of the song that i think it's a parody of. and yis, fotc parody of safety dance would be MADE OF WIN.

speaking of made of win, i want to hear your led zep parody! just 'cause fotc already did it doesn't mean you shouldn't. so let's hear it!

And then there's this one, which has been pretty evident since day one, at least to me. I think it's been mentioned before though.

Even though I knew about Led Zep's LOTR references, I never made the connection. Awesome.

I vote for a parody of the theme song to The Jeffersons or Turning Japanese by the Vapours
