Diagnosis: Death

[size=100:nspxke8c]Something horrible has happened at the glitzy Cannes Film Festival and it is all good for New Zealand.

An American distributor at the world's top film festival, under way in the south of France, has snapped up the rights to a horror spoof movie shot in Wellington with a cast that includes Flight of the Conchords' Jemaine Clement, Bret McKenzie and Rhys Darby.

The previously secret movie, Diagnosis Death, was filmed in Wellington last year and stars comedian and writer Raybon Kan, Jessica Grace Smith and Suze Tye.

McKenzie and Darby also have parts in the film, and Clement has a "
hilarious cameo"
, director Jason Stutter told The Dominion Post.

Stutter, best known for the 2004 Wellington comedy Tongan Ninja, which starred Clement and Kan, described his new film as a "
supernatural romantic comedy"
.

The rights had also been sold for the film to be distributed in Britain, he said.

The film follows people who go into an experimental facility for radical cancer treatment and begin seeing ghosts.

Stutter, who co-wrote the film with Kan, said more details about Diagnosis Death would be made public at a later date.

As to the budget: "
We can confirm that it was less than US$200 million (NZ$341 million),"
he joked.

American company Lightning Media acquired the rights at Cannes, along with three other films, including Clive Barker's Book of Blood.

Meanwhile, Kiwi director Jane Campion has also sold the American rights for her new feature, Bright Star, which premiered at Cannes.

Bright Star about the doomed loved affair between English poet John Keats and Fanny Brawne is in competition for the Palme d'Or, which Campion won for The Piano in 1993.

Vendetta Films has announced their acquisition of a new New Zealand movie, Diagnosis: Death, a supernatural romantic comedy from Jason Stutter (director of Kiwi cult classic Tongan Ninja).

Filmed secretly in Wellington last year by Stutter and co-writer/actor Raybon Kan (Pulp Comedy, Tongan Ninga), Diagnosis: Death features the ensemble cast of Kan, Suze Tye, newcomer Jessica Grace Smith and includes appearances from Flight of the Conchords Bret McKenzie and Rhys Darby as well as a cameo from Jemaine Clement.

In another coup, Stutter also secured the expertise of Academy Award winning Christian Rivers (Lord of the Rings, King Kong) for the dazzling visual effects;
and two-time Academy Award winner Mike Hedges (Lord of the Rings, World’s Fastest Indian) has mixed the film. Mastering is being done at Peter Jackson’s Park Road studios.

The film is a genre-busting horror spoof centered around an experimental facility for the treatment of terminal illnesses where the patients and staff begin seeing ghosts. Diagnosis: Death will be seeing an October release from Vendetta Films in New Zealand, making the film the perfect compliment to the Halloween Horror season.
