BBC Audiobooks announced today that it has exceeded the 1 million download mark, seeing a surge in digital spoken word with titles such as The Mighty Boosh and Flight of the Conchords constantly topping the charts.

These latest figures reveal that spoken word is becoming essential listening for the iPod generation, offering an attractive alternative to music. The top five downloaded BBC Audiobooks titles reveal listeners’ eclectic tastes: The Mighty Boosh, Blackadder Goes Forth, A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson, The Adventure of English: The Biography of English by Melvyn Bragg and The Time Travellers Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.

BBC Audiobooks released direct to download have proved popular with recent hits The Cairo Trilogy read by Omar Shariff released episodically and the Sony Award winning dramatisation of Q & A, recently filmed as Slumdog Millionaire, performing well in the audio chart.

Paul Dempsey, Managing Director of BBC Worldwide Home Entertainment says: “These results demonstrate the surge in demand for digital downloadable spoken word. The range of titles available and the ease of accessing new material online means that the potential for growth in this area is limitless. Every taste is catered for and audio presents a brilliant alternative to your standard music playlists and allows listeners to discover something new.”

The format also allows for innovative new content such as the BBC Audio New Writing range of short stories released to iTunes last year and now widely available for download at £1.95 per title. This proved to be highly popular with listeners with one of the titles Hyperpsychoreality Syndrome entering at No.3 in the iTunes fiction chart and No. 18 in the overall audio chart competing against all genres including comedy from established acts such as Ricky Gervais. This was an unprecedented success and demonstrative of the appetite for new and original audio content.

[size=100:qyl05pu0]Successful radio comedies often get the chance to transfer to TV, but Flight Of The Conchords hit the jackpot. Following a single, well-received Radio 2 series, the New Zealand duo got their break in the US with the HBO show that's cemented their status as the definitive musical comics of (at least) this decade. This new release allows fans to go back and revisit the original radio show, with added extras. If you're only familiar with Bret and Jemaine from their TV work, you'll find this intriguingly different. While many of the Conchords' most popular songs are already in place (including Bowie's In Space, The Humans Are Dead and crap-shag anthem Business Time), there's more of a focus on Rhys Darby (playing the band's manager here, as on TV) at the expense of the band, and the humour's a little drier and gentler. However, it's just as dazzlingly funny, and full of surprises;
listen out for the inspired running joke involving Darby's repeated attempts to solicit helpful advice from a fellow Kiwi, Crowded House's Neil Finn.
