Here is a radio interview someone over at the What The Folk! boards posted a few days ago. It's kind of interesting, Jemaine is pretty serious and talks about his childhood and being Maori.

Go to - Te Ahi Kaa for 18 Haratua (May) 2008 - Jemaine is about 20 minutes in.

I can only get it to stream on my computer, but if someone could make an mp3 of it, please do!

Anyone else get the feeling that he sounded really out of breath during this interview? Like he had just run a 5K or something? Haha.

Also, since I'm a sucker for languages, he's gonna have to give me a few sentences in Maori next time we cross paths!

You should just be able to click on Ami's link, download it, and then "
Add File to Library"
in your itunes. That is what I usually do.

Try using QuickTime to play it. (Instead of hitting "
save to disk"
when you click on Ami's link, choose "
open with QuickTime."
)

All right, I was able to get it to work. Thanks everyone!

It always fascinates me when people talk about their heritage and its effect on their lives. I guess that's so because I'm just a genealogical mutt, and I don't really feel I can claim any specific heritage as my own. Sometimes that makes me a little sad, like I'm missing a part of myself. Anyway, I knew that Jemaine was part Maori (also love how he says it!) but I didn't realize it was that big a part of his life. I liked hearing him talk about that and his high school (or college) days. And poor shy Jemaine! He really sounds like he has a love-hate relationship with this whole fame thing.

aw he's such a shy lovely.
i totally relate to him, though. my dad was never in the picture, i was raised by my mum as an oldest child, and our culture had a heavy influence on me. i went to high school in a terrible rural area with no outlet other than school plays and writing.

and LOL isn't Laverne and Shirly in Wisconsin?

Yes. Milwaukee to be exact!

And yay for being mixed race! I always think I have that in common with Jemaine but I never really think about the whole race thing too much. I know that here in the states it's much more of a phenomenon on the West Coast since there are more interracial marriages, but out east it isn't really a big issue, I guess because there's less Asian/Pacific influence on the culture.

I listened to this a few days ago at WTF and I really loved it. I don't think I had ever heard Jemaine talk at length about anything serious so it was nice to hear him being himself. I totally got the out of breath thing too, I wonder what that was about? And he sounded kind of worn down in general. I wasn't aware that he spoke Maori and I'd love to hear him do it. In the Tongan Ninja commentary the Maori thing was addressed a few times and I thought it was interesting as it is a culture few of us in the US know anything about. Many years ago when I was in London I befriended a Maori girl and learned about the culture through her but aside from that experience I had never heard of it before. That he admits to being shy endears him to me more than ever. I feel a bit badly that he has to deal with fans approaching him but he sounds like he's making the best of it that he can. And when he said he doesn't respect authority I thought - that man is SO speaking my language.

wow! I am soo glad you guys shared this with us...Jemaine sounds soo endearing in this interview...I just want to hug him...it sounds like there is so many parts of his life that he doesn't feel comfortable talking about...and rightly so because it's very personal to him.

I have to say that I had NO idea what the Maori thing was...I have never heard of it which makes me very sad...so I am looking things up that are helping me to familiarize myself on what it is. If you could put it in laments terms shewolf that would be really nice?? ;<br />D

yes, Jemaine did sound like he'd just run a marathon...but, it sounded like he was doing something...like out with his cell phone or something. I know I have a hard time walking and talking at the same time...funny...I know! lol

I love him even more now...what a great, complex man he is.

this was a great interview <img src=" title="Very Happy" border="0"/> it also sounded to me like he was walking and talking....not super out of breath, but clearly doing something else. i also didn't know that jemaine spoke maori, which is hella cool, and another example of him becoming more perfect every time i think it's not possible ;
) i thought it was interesting how he hadn't really thought about how his heritage affected his career...he seemed kind of at a loss when the interviewer asked him that, haha. anyway, lovely to understand a little more about my favorite conchord <img src=" title="Very Happy" border="0"/>

also i think that was pretty funny that he went college/high school with his interviewer. haha.

That's cool, Talene! The Resident Manager of my favorite dorm that I used to live at was Armenian. I still remember how to pronounce her last name, though I don't think I could even attempt to spell it. <img src=" title="Very Happy" border="0"/>
This interview kind of reminded me of the first time I showed my parents the fotc show on a big screen. (they'd only seen the clips and such on youtube) As soon as the first scene with the guys came on my mom looked at Jemaine and said "
Oh, he is Maori."
