The Topp Twins take on the US
Published: 9:41PM Wednesday June 16, 2010
Source: ONE News
*
They are one of New Zealand's favourite entertainment acts but what will Americans make of the likes of Ken and Ken, camp mother and camp leader?
The Topp Twins are in the US to find out. They have been on tour singing, playing and looking for a distributor for their movie.
And on this reconnaissance of the US market, Linda and Jools Topp have been helped by another pair of progressively-inclined enzedders - the lads from the Flight of the Conchords.
The Twins' manager, Arani Cuthbert, credits the Conchords for getting Americans to understand New Zealand, something she struggled with in previous tours.
"
I had a real struggle with trying to book the Twins and people not understanding what we said, or the humour, and the Conchords have really changed that a lot,"
she told TV ONE's Close Up programme.
Jools Topp says everyone that talks to her in the US asks her if she knows the Conchords.
"
They really have got New Zealand out there. So they're paving the way for us, which is great,"
she says.
The Twins are looking for a distributor for their documentary, The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls, which was a box office smash in New Zealand last year.
But in a land where the billboards seem as big as aircraft carriers, getting noticed might be difficult.
Brian Sweeney from public relations and communications company Sweeney Vesty says the Twins have a tough job ahead of them getting their film shown in cinemas.
"
The independent film distribution circuit has taken a real beating because of the economy, and the structure of the industry, so one has to start from the ground up, and that's what the Twins are doing on this visit."
Cuthbert says they are taking it step-by-step.
"
There's a couple of companies we're talking to that are going to help us release the film theatrically in cinemas."
The Twins won the jury award at the Gay and Lesbian Newfest Film Festival in New York.
The judges commended the film for its craft of story-telling, its irrepressible spirit of radical protest and, of course, for the singing.

Exhibit A: I had a casting director send me out to play Miss France on an episode of Flight of the Conchords, and she asked me to bring my native dress with me. I had to ask her what the hell that was. “A beret, a striped sweater, and black capri pants of course.” Naturally, we natives of France love to gambol down our native boulevards in our native dress, eating only baguettes, and sneering through a thick haze of Gaulois smoke at trembling American tourists. That is our raison d’etre. At least I got a huge guffaw out of Jemaine Clement and Brett Mckenzie when I told them why I was dressed the way I was for the song “Ladies of the World”. ...

From the Guardian's World Cup coverage:
(You can always rely on the Guardian for obscure Conchords references. They have some real fans there it seems. )

Errrrr, Roger Twose? Ewen Chatfield? Martin Sneddon? Sean Fitzpatrick? Ryan Nelsen? Brett off Flight of the Conchords?

Would you ask a similar question if it was the other way round?
I think because he's calm, focused, consistent, keeps his private life in secret... Bret is more open and ready to tell you everything if you ask him. It's always Jemaine who says "
It's non of your business"
.
There are many more reasons but these are the first that came to my mind.

i would! i feel like the media tends to treat them as a unit...and i especially thought it was weird because jemaine was tied with someone else, but then bret was lower. i wonder how they calculated this? it seems so random
