When You Fell For These Guys Empty When You Fell For These Guys

I'd love to know the moment when you realised that this was as necessary as breathing oxygen or became almost like a drug to you [image] (sorry I've just wanted to use that smiley for a while <img src=" title="Razz" border="0"/>). So this is how it happened for me and maybe you share your experience:

My brother told me about this band/show called Flight of the Conchords one night when we were celebrating something in a pub. My first thoughts were of some kinda show about French pilots (I thought he meant Concordes <img src=" title="Razz" border="0"/>). He was telling me about 'Bret you've Got It Going On'

So later that night he stuck on the first DVD and I was immedaitely freaked out but started to enjoy it around 'Robots' although I wasn't convinced totally. It wasn't til I got to Mugged that really laughed out loud and loved it. (it was the Hipphopopotamus bit). Since then I've been hooked [image] (also since then I have discovered the hotness that is 'Le Boom King' [image]

So, care to share?

My HBO show moment (cross-posted from Least Fav. Episode thread):

video. I think that was the exact moment when I realized I loved the show. I was hysterical throughout the whole raining/fence scene. It reminded me so much of one of those horrible 80s videos. ;<br />D

This was my defining moment too. I loved the first episode on my first watch so much all the way through, but...

The fence moment was when my complete love of the Conchords HBO show kicked in. I've never looked back. Smile

Seeing the HBO show was not my first experience of the Conchords, but that moment was when I totally fell in love with the show. [image]

I'll add my very first Conchord "
Fell in Love"
moments soon. Smile

Like I said in the Least Favorite Episode thread, the "
I"
m Not Crying"
video was also the moment I realized I loved the show (like Sarah). My friend burned me a dvd of the first four episodes insisting that I had to watch it because she loved it and thought I would too. I caught up on the rest of the episodes (eps 5 - 7) through HBO on Demand when I was visiting my parents and was also able to watch Girlfriends when it aired for the first time. Which brings me to the moment I realized I was in love with Bret. Smile

Yeah, the Girlfriends episode. No clue why it took me so long to realize Bret was amazing and adorable and just... sigh... perfect, but it did. Maybe it had something to do with how innocent and vulnerable he seemed. [image] At any rate, I've been hooked ever since then. ;<br />D

I remember seeing the foux da fa fa video when someone posted something about them on a design blog and made sure I watched the first episode on BBC4. I sky +'d it and watched it over and over and I was B.L.O.W.N. A.W.A.Y. - I was a little overwhelmed by Jemaine's lips at first, they reminded me a lot of my English teacher's lips and I wasn't keen on him but Jemaine has taught me that big lips do not necessarily make a man a bad man.

Another contributing factor was that I've always loved comedy programmes a lot, but they've never really contained any fanciable males. David Brent, Alan Partridge, Vic and Bob, Larry David = really funny not that hot
Bret and Jemaine and Dave = really funny waaay hot
I suppose the Mighty Boosh men are ok but Noel Fielding really annoys me with his 'zany-ness'

Basically - hot men (especially you, Bret) with slight confidence issues +SUBTLETY + the outfits and the animal jumpers +the satisfying juxtaposition of the facial hair (sideboards for Jemaine, beard for Bret) +the songs +he little bits with the days of the week on wallpaper and various fabrics + the wood panelling on the walls in the consulate+the accents = everything I've ever wanted in one programme

I just appreciate it aesthetically, and it reminds me of folk music and the woods

i remember one day my mom was watching it on tv and i recognized some of the music cus i'd seen bits of it online. she told me she thought i'd like the show but i couldn't be bothered watching it, until one day when i was bored out of my mind and figured i'd give it a shot. found a website that streamed all the episodes in perfect quality and i was hooked from the very beginning. i didn't immediately love it and i didn't realize how hot bret was until after i'd watched the entire first season. then i watched it again. and again. then i went to england and found the dvd on sale at HMV. after that i watched the entire first season EVERY DAY for a really long time haha, i realize now that was a little odd but i just couldn't help myself - i was always very busy at the time and watching the show always made me calm and cheered me up, even if it was just playing in the background while i was doing other things. then i went to costa rica and i couldn't watch the show or listen to the music for three weeks, i just about died and that's when i realized i really really really love these guys and everything they do ;<br />D

I've only been a fan since January, even though my good friend told me about it last April. I'm a procrastinator, what can I say? The pilot didn't have me completely sold on the show, but I kept watching because every show deserves at least two chances, right? I'm glad I kept watching because I became obsessed hardcore. I can't pinpoint the exact moment I became obsessed, but it happened. I watched every episode probably at least three times in the span of about two or three weeks, going through the entire season in two days (not hard really--it's only 6 hours). I listened to their music nonstop for weeks on end and even now, two months on, still listen to them all the time. Even after all the listens and all the times I've seen the show, I still love them and they're still funny. Can't wait to see them in DC in April! [image]
Also, I took notice of Bret first but the more I watched the more I liked Jemaine. And now I'm fairly certain there's no going back. ;<br />D

My story is like most of them on here. My buddy was over at my house one night and I asked him what he was doing that night. He told me that he picked up season 1 of this show called Flight Of the Conchords. My first thought of this was some kind of space show. Not sure what it was about, but the title of the show seemed a little weird.

He gave me the first season on dvd and watched the first episode. Halfway through I thought it was a little weird with the songs and all but thought i would give it a try since Scott was raving about it. It wasnt till the 3rd or 4th episode till I got hooked. We watched the whole season in 2 or 3 days. Then we downloaded all the songs. Incredible! One Night Stand was actually on Comedy network a few days later and its all history after that.

Now I got a Rap Dancin' shirt like Bret and Im counting down the days till the Vancouver show in May! WOO HOO!!

Well... I didn't "
fall"
for these guys the way that 95% of this message board "
fell"
for them. But I have always loved novelty music and funny people like these guys.

Back before I knew who these guys were, I was a big Tenacious D fan. I saw the commercial for their show and decided I was not going to watch them because they were to similar to The D's tv show. Two struggling artists, two guitars, comedy songs in every episode. I felt like they were ripping off The D's idea.

I had not thought about them since that time, then I happen to run into a youtube video on my friends MySpace page. It was the series version of Hiphopopotamus. I thought it was just a homemade rap video someone had made. (i know that seems silly now, but the way it was filmed gave it a home made feel to me). I showed it to my GF and she pointed out to me that it was FOTC. I couldnt believe it. Then she found Business Time and forwarded me to that. I liked it of course. So I did more searching on their songs and watched a few. I came to a point where I liked the songs a lot, but I stopped listening to them. Why? So I could go buy the season 1 dvd and not be spoiled! I wanted to see their show and be surprised with the songs.

And now here I am. FOTC is one of my fav tv shows, bands, and heroes. I almost like them more than The D. Almost.

You know Rob...yes, we think they're hot and we talk about it...big hairy deal. It sort of offends me when you think that's what we're all about.

But we love them for soooooo many more reasons than that. We probably love them for all the same reasons you do AND because they're attractive.

I didn't fall for them because they're hot. There are several hot untalented acts out there that I could care less about...I would NOT love them if they were JUST hot. I didn't even find Jemaine attractive at first. I LOVE Jack Black...but I'm not attracted to him at all. The only reason I don't obsess over Tenacious D is because that style of music doesn't interest me.

What made me fall for Flight of the Conchords was the song "
Bret, You Got It Goin' On"
. It was last summer. Ami showed them to me and I thought it was hilarious. At the time I told Ami that I thought Jemaine looked like a goon haha. He grew on me...a lot. I understood their sense of humor as soon as I started watching...it took me a while to understand everything they were saying because of their accents though lol.

I still think Murray is the funniest character on the show...he always gets me laughing the most. I think what made most people fall for them is how funny they are. I mean that's their best quality by far.

The more I watched, the more I loved them!

ADD: MORE than 95% of the contributing members of the board are women that are attracted to men...so talking about their looks is bound to happen on a regular basis.

When You Fell For These Guys Empty When You Fell For These Guys

It all started last semester for me. I was taking American Government with a Professor who is not only one of the most attractive men I've ever laid eyes on physically (beaten only by Jemaine and Bret), but he is the funniest, most genuine person I've ever met. ANYWAY - one day he quoted the show in his discussion (and to be honest I don't even remember what it was). I laughed at it, thought, "
I should check them out"
and...then subsequently forgot about it Sad

THEN - This semester I'm taking same professor again for International Relations. In January I had a tonsillectomy which meant a week of nothing but laying in bed and sleeping. I needed SOMETHING to do. So I downloaded the first episode of FOTC onto my ipod touch. When I was talking to my Professor in his office hours I casually brought it up and he was like, "
You are going to LOVE these guys...I can see you really liking Jemaine too"
so I got home and started watching the first episode. When I heard "
Most Beautiful Girl"
I was hooked. I downloaded all the other episodes from season one onto my iPod and watched them all week. Ordered the S1 DVD (figuring there'd be extras *shakes fist*) and have been ...I'll just say it - obsessed - ever since!

my former "
'uck buddy"
& friend introduced them to me. actually, you can pretty much discover my entire beginning with fotc if you dig deep enough through my myspace comments from summer '07.
anyway, i had never even heard of fotc before when my friend/uck buddy randomly posted a video of "
if you're into it"
(i think this was a few days after the episode aired) as a myspace comment. i immediately fell in love. i was going through a tough break up at the time
and i hadn't laughed so hard in weeks. i asked her what the hell it was that she posted because i really really digged it. i thought it was a video a couple random you tube dudes created (similar to rob's first impression of it). she explained it was this amazing new show on hbo (although she's known about them before the show) and that we'd HAVE to get together and watch the current episodes on "
on demand"
. and we did. around that time "
sally returns"
had just aired so we watched all 5. this show was 'ucking perfect. the subtle humor (really reminded me of spinal tap), the extremely creative songs and videos, the somewhat low-budget look, the dead pan acting...i 'ucking died and went to silly heaven.
a few days after, "
bowie"
had aired and she posted the entire episode in 3 or 4 parts from you tube and i laughed the entire time and decided jemaine really had it going on in my book (semi bi sexual attraction wise hah). i tried to get my best friend/roommate at the time into it and showed it to him but he really didn't dig it much. he came around though. he's now a big fan and never misses an episode.
anyway, i guess that's pretty much it. i've gotten many people into it since then...my girlfriend, my mom, my dad, my brothers, their girlfriends, a couple friends, a work buddy of mine...and it shall go on!

When You Fell For These Guys Empty When You Fell For These Guys

Sat Mar 14, 2009 2:03 am
I had a chance to fall for these guys, but I didn't bite...

Found the song 'Robots' playing on someone's Myspace back in mid 2006. It was live. It was pretty odd sounding. I found it interesting, but I almost thought they weren't even real. So I didn't bother pursuing... How weird of me? Maybe the voices scared me away. I don't know! Can't explain why I didn't find out more.

Then in late 2007 my bf's friend posted 'Albi the Racist Dragon' on my Myspace from their Comedy Central showcase and I thought it was hilarious. Shortly after, I discovered 'Robots' and drew my bf's attention with various links to videos that I thought were funny. He's starting to like them pretty quick...

My bf's birthday rolls around and I have many ideas on what to get him for his birthday --- something Tenacious D? Weird Al? A funny pair of polka dot socks? --- then it hits me: FOTC CD!

But he has iTunes.
So I got him FOTC Season 1 on DVD instead!

The night of his birthday, we're out and about and I sneakily hide his DVD gift in the compartment attached to the door of his car. I didn't even wrap it or anything. He sees this random white bag that he swears he didn't put there, opens it, and freaks out! (Did I mention I was on the phone with my bf tracking down this DVD for him at a bookstore the night before? The clerk took awhile to help me. There was only one left in the store. My bf never caught on to what I was up to. Well, maybe he knew I was out buying him A gift.)

Anyway, after he got that DVD we watched FOTC all through that winter. We even made gingerbread houses while watching it 1 week before Christmas too. Great times. Watching that DVD is what finally got me fully into FOTC.

I mean, I'm a girl and I can't say I really 'fell' for them either in an "
oh, you're such smokin' hottie-bo-totties"
sort of way. I'm not like that for some reason. I mean they're not ugly, but I'm more about what people do, and contribute and offer to the world. So I guess I fell for their ideas, clever style, and lack of appropriate words/mumbling with such great comedic timing.

I don't know how it happened. It just sort of... did. I finally decided, after a year of hearing about them, to check them out.

The first thing I looked up was the Bowie song, because I've been a hardcore David Bowie fan since I was about eleven or twelve years old. I found a really old live video, the one where Jemaine has sunglasses on and his hair's really shaggy... Well, both of them are shaggy but he was the one that caught my eye. I read the Bust magazine interview when I bought it, even though I had no idea who they were, and thought, "
Hm. Two dudes from New Zealand... Whatever."
I couldn't believe I had been so dismissive.

After maybe a month, I decided to buy the DVDs and then was so excited when I got them that I ended up watching the ENTIRE first season that night. The next day, I made fans of my friend Melissa and her younger brother, Brad. Melissa's a devout Breterosexual, and I am a hardcore Jemainiac, so we have arguments over who's more attractive. But it wasn't until she said "
Ohh, he's so cute!"
that the thought I might be attracted to one of them ever occurred to me.

But now? I get super-excited whenever I hear them mentioned, I have stolen TV Guides from my school because they had pictures in them, and... let's just say Jem dominates my imagination most days.

My sister made me watch "
Drive By"
in summer '07. And I adored it. I LOVE absurdist humor, and since I lived in Australia for a while as a teen, the whole rivalry thing was familiar and cracked me up.

But a lot of health stuff, work, Viking metal and getting up to my armpits in the mire that is "
The Shield"
postponed me seeing it.

In the meantime, whenever Billy Jam or Trouble would play their songs on WFMU, I'd always laugh. Funny and wry songs always have a place in my heart.

So, over Christmas break this year, I netflixed the first season. I was completely and totally smitted by the time Jemaine was gesturing with his, er, kebab. (Incidently, hotess aside, I think the "
Most Beautiful Girl"
video is a true work of comic genius)

So now I have all the CDs, pre-ordered Season 2, spend my time making Jemotivational posters on this board, etc. etc. etc.

It's a good obsession.

Like a lot of people here I came across them one youtube. It was totally by accident and had never heard of them before. It was the One Night Stand version of Business Time and I thought it was hilarious. I liked it but I wasn't hooked yet. I watched several of the clips and loved all of them. I didn't know at the time what it was about these guys that I loved so much and then it hit me. I know a lot of people compare them to the D but I don't get that comparison at all. The reason I feel for these guys was because they reminded my of The Monkees. When I was younger I could not get enough of The Monkees. And for me it wasn't how good looking there are (cause they definitely are) but it was the fact they could make me laugh so much. I love a guy with a since of humor and they definitely have it.

When You Fell For These Guys Empty When You Fell For These Guys

I think I've posted my story on the board before, but not in this thread. So...let's dig in!

Back in 2005 I was working for a theater in Georgia where most people were married with kids. I had a friend there who was single and we were obsessed with comedy. He was watching HBO when their special aired and he told me about it. A few days later, it replayed, so he threw a tape into his VCR and recorded the show. He brought it into work and begged me to watch.

I was hesitant because I hate being told what I'll love. I kept the VHS for about a week before I could suck it up and watch. And I was in love. I showed my roommates. We had weekly LOST parties, so we showed the tape to everyone who came over that night. Pretty soon, we were introducing FOTC to two or three new people at our college every week. My coworker bought their EP which had to be imported from NZ. We did all the research we could, but there was very little out there. We watched the same 10 YouTube clips repeatedly. When I got my iPod, they were first to be added.

I moved to Vegas, and started pimping them in my circle of friends there. It was starting to work, but mostly people would get bored with me saying things like "
Business Time"
and not knowing what it meant.

I moved to Chicago and was shopping in a little gift shop where I found a foam robot for my old coworker's birthday. I bought it and didn't even realize until I got to my car that on the back it read: Catch Flight of the Conchords on HBO this summer. The gift for him, was more appropriate than I could have imagined. (And, I would KILL to have it back! ) ;
) That's when I started seeing posters...everywhere.

I didn't get to catch the show until midseason when I realize I had On Demand. I turned my new Chicago roommate onto them and she was hooked. I didn't know they were HUGE until I tried to get tickets to their show and it sold out in minutes. And I didn't know this place existed until Irene (HI, IRENE!) asked me on Myspace how I'd met the guys and then asked if I'd ever logged on here.

And, the rest is history. I spend my afternoons here...daydreaming and talking to you lovely people.

EDIT: OH! Watching HBO One Night Stand, I was in love with Bret. My friends thought I was crazy. They though Jemaine was the winner. I didn't get the Jemaine fetish until the show premiered on HBO in '07, but then went right back to Bret after a month or so.

When You Fell For These Guys Empty When You Fell For These Guys

These stories are lovely [image]

It is weird...as I encountered the boys in various forms over the years, but never ever knew them as Flight of the Conchords until early this year.

Firstly, I was a Figwit fan. I adore Lord of the Rings and at the height of my teen Legolas obsession I fell in love with this mysterious dark haired elf named Figwit. It didn't last very long. I ran back to the blonde [image]

There was also the UK Phones4U advert which, at the time, I would sing constantly. And still sang up until this year, claiming it to be the best advert jingle in the history of ever. It was the "
all my friends in the alien zoo, a mingningminganaming ningamanoo"
bit that pleased me most [image]

Then me and my boyfriend saw a trailer of Eagle VS Shark a couple of years ago on the Apple trailers website. We desperately wanted to watch it as it looked like similar in style to our other favourites (me You and Everyone We Know, Thumbsucker, Happines, Napolean Dynamite etc...) and it was a New Zealand film too...my boyfriend is from New Zealand so it is obligatory that we champion any of their exports.

Anyway, there were no cinema releases of it where we live so we had to wait until the DVD release. I watched it every day in that first week of buying it.

Also...at some point between 2007-2008 somebody posted 'Frodo Don't Wear the Ring...' I only watched it the once and found it quite amusing but didn't follow it up. I don't know why. Being a LOTR obsessive, maybe I was offended or put off. I don't know haha! But I feel pretty stupid now, as I love that song!!

And then, about 8 months ago, Scott started getting comments from various friends of ours about looking like "
That one from Flight of the Conchords"
I had no idea who people were talking about, and paid no attention at all. At christmas, as a thank you to two friends of ours, I bought Season 1 Flight of the Conchords, at Scott's request, because apparently they loved them. At this point, everybody was telling us to watch them and we kept saying we would, when we had the opportunity.

But we never.

Then, at the end of February, my Grandfather passed away and, on the same day, we bought Flight of the Conchords Season 1 on DVD. It was Scott's birthday that weekend and I was taking him away. My parents told me to stick to my plans before coming home to be with my family on the Monday. Whilst at the hotel, I was too upset to leave for a meal and couldn't go through with the plans I had made (resteraunt, cinema, usual nice date jaunts), as I was just too upset and scared to go outside what with being so far away from my family and not knowing how to deal with what had just happened.

Scott stuck on Flight of the Conchords to try and cheer me up.

I can honestly say, I will never ever ever be able to express how much they inadvertently did for me that weekend, and in the coming weeks. Within the first few moments (in fact, it was when Bret said to Jemaine, That's not triple figures"
) I was hooked and they alleviated any pain I was feeling.

They have the ability to lift my spirits no matter how down or upset or lonely I am feeling. Every time I hear their songs or watch their episodes everything seems to dissipate and all I do is laugh. And laugh, and laugh and laugh.

So that is how I came to know of them [image]

I have introduced all of my friends to them (the people who knew of them before me were mutual friends of me and Scott, my own friends had no idea who they were!) and they are now all devoted fans. For my birthday one of my presents was a little canvas that Scott had made, with the Jemaine poster printed on it. I bought all of their music, and the radio show they did for the BBC (I listen to it at work). I desperately want to see them live [image] But I might not be able to because it is likely they will play over here when I'm in New Zealand at the end of the year :-[
