plot sounds bad to me...sounds like it will be way too wacky and more over the top than it needs to be. i hope i'm not too wrong.
i'm sure the songs will be enjoyable though, they always are.

Onion A/V Club:

[size=133:96d2o3bn]Flight Of The Conchords : Season 2 : Episode 3 "
The Tough Brets"

by Genevieve Koski February 1, 2009

[size=100:96d2o3bn]You know, after getting that cushion stolen a couple weeks back, and now with this week’s noise complaints, it has to be asked: Why does the Public Library keep inviting Flight Of The Conchords to play there? They clearly haven’t mastered the art of making sound without having people hear them. Not to mention the fact that Bret nearly started a rap war this week with his freestyle, “[Insert successful rapper] is not very good!”

Since, as Dave points out, “Here in the United States, rivalries between rappers usually end in death… or worse,” Bret’s compelled to form a gang of his own for protection in tonight’s episode. However, The Tough Brets only manage to mildly inconvenience Jemaine and give a bratty pre-teen a bruised shin before unceremoniously “disbandoning.” (Well, except Murray—or is it Mur Ray?—who bravely soldiers on alone.) Meanwhile, Murray and Jemaine are embroiled in their own rivalry, with a group of douchey Australian bros headed up by Ambassador Charles Widmore. With so much gang activity—not to mention the fact that Conchords has somehow managed to go this long without doing a Broadway-style number—a West Side Story send-up was pretty much a given. And while the “Stay Cool, Brett” dance routine was one of the highlights of the season thus far (who knew Murray had those kind of moves?), I kind of wish the song itself hadn’t been hewn quite so close to its source material.

Last week I mentioned that “Sugar Lumps” and “You Don’t Have To Be A Prostitute” were pretty obvious in their inspiration as well, as opposed to last season’s songs, which were clearly influenced by specific musical styles without being straight-up song parodies. It’s starting to become apparent that, while the series’ first season mostly integrated older songs from the duo’s BBC series and stage routine, this season, the songs are being written in service of the plots, which might be why we’re seeing so many parodies as opposed to fully original numbers. And while I enjoyed both of last week’s songs immensely, “Stay Cool, Brett” fell flat. Why try to improve on lyrics like, “Got a rocket in your pocket, keep coolly cool boy,” anyway? Those lines sound positively Conchord-esque, and are (unintentionally) funnier than this song was. But then again… there was the dancing.

Far better was the “I’ve Got Hurt Feelings” rap number and its melancholy, full-cast reprise. This one felt like a truly original Conchords number, and an extremely catchy one at that. (I already caught myself humming it while doing chores today.) I think “Hurt Feelings” succeeds for the same reason “Hiphopapotamus v Rhymenocerous” does: The rap format allows for a higher concentration of silly, tossed-off lyrics (“The day after my birthday is not my birthday mum!”), and that many funnies combined with a catchy chorus is a winner in my book.

Also a winner in my book: Mel’s paintings. Also, Mel’s delivery of the line, “You should hang it on you wall so you can see how strong and powerful you are!” Kristin Schall’s ability to make creepiness cute cannot be overstated. Nor can Dave’s increasingly hilarious contributions this season: His weaponized/utensilized gloves, his “can attack!” on Jemaine, and especially his story of the rapper who chopped a guy’s whole body off, leaving only the dick behind, were all high points in an episode that had many of them. While I’m delighted that the roles of the supporting cast have been beefed up this season (even Greg and Doug are getting more screen time), when combined with the somewhat lazy nature of the parody-heavy songs we’ve seen, it makes me wonder if we’re witnessing a bit of fatigue on Bret and Jemaine’s part. Or maybe I’m just looking too much into a natural second-season growth period. At any rate, as long as we keep getting spectacularly silly moments like Bret hiding in the ceiling because he was afraid Missy Eliot was coming to chop his body off, I’m happy.

Grade: B+

Stray observations:

• The Conchords have a sorta-rivalry with the only other New Zealand rapper, Steve (“Did Steve tell you that perchance? Steeeeve…”), who’s actually a “lovely guy.”

• Mr. Lee hiding in the cupboard was probably my favorite moment of the night. And Mr. Lee’s contribution to “Stay Cool, Bret.” Mr. Lee, where have you been all my life?

• If anyone can tell me where to get Bret’s “Rap Dancin” shirt, I’ll let you join my gang, “The Ironically Shirted Genevieves.”

• If HBO’s smart, they’ll start selling poster reproductions of Mel’s painting ASAP. I have a big blank space above my mantle that’s just screaming for it.

• I’ve run out of the screener episodes HBO sent me, so starting next week I’ll be watching in real time, which means these posts will be going up later. Try to contain disappointment.

New Jersey Star-Ledger:

[size=133:yswfv8gu]Flight of the Conchords, "
The Tough Brets"
: Did Steve tell you that, perchance. Steeeeve!

by Alan Sepinwall/The Star-Ledger
Sunday February 01, 2009, 10:35 PM

[size=100:yswfv8gu]Spoilers for tonight's "
Flight of the Conchords"
coming up just as soon as I start a bikey gang...

"
I'm the Tough Brets."
-Murray

Where last week's episode was a perfect combination of music and laughter, "
The Tough Brets"
felt more like the season premiere. The series becomes more self-assured as a comedy with each passing week -- Bret forming the world's lamest street gang to protect himself from non-existent rap rivalries had the appropriate Dada touch -- but the songs were largely forgettable. The hurt feelings number was really only notable for the reprise, and there only because Mel, Doug and Greg got to join Murray as the singers. And, a few weeks after first watching, I couldn't tell you a thing about the final song except that it was a "
West Side Story"
pastiche.

Still, the gang was a delight, with Dave trying to prove how dangerous garden tools can be and Seymour Cassel doing one of his patented elderly eccentrics as senile old gangster Johnny Boy. ("
Gentlemen Jims"
was probably my favorite of his long list of gang names, but I could be talked into picking "
Monkey Lords"
instead.) And, of course, the whole plot featured that now familiar "
Conchords"
plot illogic, with Bret and Murray becoming convinced that Missy Elliott or someone like her was on their way to smoke Bret based on a library gig that no one paid attention to.

The other two plots weren't quite as strong. Mel's increasingly homo-erotic fan painting was a cute sight gag to a point but didn't really go anywhere. Murray getting bullied by his counterparts at the Australian consulate was a nice continuation of the show's running gag about Aussie/Kiwi tensions, and cleverly cast the ubiquitous Alan Dale (a native New Zealander) as the wicked Australian ambassador. I hope to see more of him, when he isn't busy trying to murder Benjamin Linus.

A few other thoughts:

• Speaking of the series' unique logic, I like that Bret's skinniness -- and Murray and Jemaine's belief that this is a bad thing -- has become a running gag.

• The guys explain to Dave that there are only three rappers in New Zealand, including Steve -- whom I'm assuming is the guy first mentioned in "
Rhyemoceros."
Who is this Steve, and why has he angered the Conchords so?

• Another good running gag is Murray's lack of command of the English language, here with him insisting that The Tough Brets be "
disbandoned."

Finally, I had hoped to transcribe the interview I did with Bret, Jemaine and producer James Bobin in time to run with this review (or in lieu of this review), but I just didn't get a chance. Hopefully, I'll get it done by late next week. I imagine it's going to take a lot longer than the usual transcript because of the accents -- and the similar timbre of Bret and James' voices on the phone -- and so I need to carve out a while where I'll have the time to go back and listen over, and over, and over again. Sigh... But they do answer the question about Steve -- sort of.

I thought the songs were really well-integrated in this episode. While Stay Cool Bret was perhaps not as solid as some of their best songs, the video was great. And Hurt Feelings was amazing.

I can't wait to download Hurt Feelings tomorrow!

The plot was a little thin this time, it felt more like a series of gags, but the videos were good enough to make up for it.

There wasn't as much eye candy as last episode, IMO. Sad

Yes, I think it's hard to beat the one-two punch of Sugalumps/You Don't Have to Be a Prostitute from last week.
I liked Hurt Feelings but they could've done a little bit more with it in some parts (I think Bret ended 3 or 4 consecutive lines with the word "
town"
- they could've been more creative there).

I don't think I even noticed if the plot was thin, thick or what-have-you because the overall execution was great and the pacing was so tight - there was really no filler. It was jam-packed with hilarious shii.

Bret interviewing potential gang members, Dave's faux bad-assness and gardening tool weaponry, Murray and his plus-one Jemaine at the Australian party ("
let's just get the free cheese and grapes and get out of here"
), Greg and the broken intercom situation ("
that's how you dis someone"
), Mel & Jemaine's interactions and the paintings (paraphrasing here: "
Bret's didn't turn out well, I went overboard with the shading on the crotch"
), Mr. Lee popping out of cupboard to smack Jemaine, the look on Bret's face when the salesman offers him the ladies' wetsuit, the cop chastising Bret for kicking that kid ("
we'll let it slide because we don't like that kid"
)...

Also LOVED the little reprise of "
Hurt Feelings"
that included Mel, Doug and Greg - brilliant!

Oh yeah, I laughed my ass off. It's just thought things ended a little abruptly. For season 2 episodes, I would put this below The New Cup and above the season premiere. It was better that some of the first season episodes as well.

I'm rewatching right now, I might feel differently once I have time to watch more closely.
