Hi everyone,

this is my first post. I’ve been reading you guys for quite a long time but never felt I had anything interesting to say. I just wanted to congratulate Sarah for her excellent review. I teach film studies at university while I’m doing my PhD on film and TV studies. Even though my dissertation is not about FotC (I wish it were!), I’m always searching for articles about them with the vain hope to find the time to write some (scholar) essay on the issue someday. As Sarah mentioned in her review, star/fanship studies are in great need for expansion. Richard Dyer’s book surely needs a revision. In any case, Sarah’s analysis of the guys’ personas and live act is just great.

I’m from Spain, by the way. You can add a new nationality to your list [image]

Hi Paranoia,
Thank you so much. I have a degree in English and Film Studies and loved it. I wanted to go back and do my PHD and become a film lecturer but I haven't the money. Glad you agree about "
Star Theory"
There was a woman who wrote in the 80s whose name has slipped my mind wrote a more empirical essay based on the results of a survey she conducted which I quite liked but it's definitely in need of revision!

Thanks again and congrats on your first post <img src=" title="Very Happy" border="0"/>

Glad you decided to post Smile

Welcome, Paranoia!! :hai:

Yes, we are always excited about new people, especially from countries we haven't had here before! Speaking of, you and Sarah should add yourselves to the [url=Flighty map][/url], if interested!

Anyway, this place would be good a good source for star/fanship research. ;

To Sarah (NotRealName), I am very impressed by your writing. I have been away from the board for a bit, and am trying to catch up. I am in awe of your (A) Thoroughness;
(B) Perspective;
(C) Writing ability. I hope your plans are to do something with (C) long term. I would definitely read your book!!!

To Paranoia: Welcome aboard. One question how in Spain do you watch FOTC? Do you use YouTube, or is there another better way for you?

Thanks everyone for your warm welcome. The Flighty map is really cool, I didn't know it existed. I'll definitely check it out.

Rhymenocerous: sadly, the Conchords are quite unknown in Spain. Before the release of the first season in DVD, the only way to have access to the show was the internet, of course (thanks God for it). I discovered them thanks to my boyfriend (he's kind of an internet geek) and I've tried to spread the word ever since. Nevertheless, those of us "
enlightened"
with knowledge of the Conchords are very few. The laguage is an important barrier, of course. Lately, the show is being broadcast by a cable network here in Spain but the whole show is dubbed! Even the songs!!! It's horrible, it made me cringe when I saw it. Despite this, I hope it will contribute to increase their popularity here in Spain (which currently amounts to zero, anyway).

I don't know if this is of any intereset to Sarah's stuff, but my pal's hubby just went to a shrink. The shrink said one fo the signs of depression is reading romance novels. Now,my pal reads em. So her hubby thinks she is depressed! I don't read em, but I kinda correlate going on this board and Conchord obsession with it. NOT that the show is as lame like a romance novel, the show and the guys' songs are brillliant. But it is a nice lapse out of reality and into the fun zone. And an obsession.

Utterly correct. Obsessive fanship is a sign of depression. It's escapism. I watch more FOTC when I'm stressed out (the exact wrong time to watch...when I should be doing something important!)

Obsessive fanship can be a sign of depression.

But I completely lose interest in my obsessions (film, Conchords, comics, etc) when I feel down. The happier I am, the more I'm driven to be a fan. You can almost track it on a graph.

FotC is genius for drawing in fans who obsession-hop ... they have so much variety.

Sometimes I'll be obsessed with watching the hbo show. Then i'll get sick of that and listen to the bbc radio show. Then I'll get sick of that and listen to their recordings. Then I'll get sick of those and watch their live youtube clips. Then I'll start missing the hbo show and repeat the cycle. <img src=" title="Razz" border="0"/>

can[/b] be a sign of depression.

Yeah, sorry. It's definitely not that in every case. I'd say my obsessions are linked to my mood though. But I'm maybe a different kind of fan. I think I aspire to be like them. I don't think I'd ever want to meet the people I obsess about or anything. I'd be too embarrassed that I knew so much about them. I think my fanship's more tragic in some ways! I think it's probably based on escaping my own problems than actually loving everything they do because I wouldn't say they were my favourite comedians/musicians or even comedy musicians! I just admire their achievements a lot and I think that's because I really want to achieve the same things so I see them as role models in a way.

Just in case anyone is interested here you can see an example of the horrendous Spanish version of I'm not crying. This is the dubbing that's been done in Spain, not the one from South America you may have already seen:

Words cannot express how much I hate the dubbed version of the show. As I see it, all the humour and cleverness have been taken away by the (awful) translation of the songs... but yes, I'm always trying to spread the word as much as possible... FOTC has at least 5 fans (counting me) here in my city! [image]

As someone who doesn't speak Spanish I can't tell that there is a lousy translation and it's pretty funny to see them with those weird voices coming out of them. [image]
