Series 2 on UK TV? Empty Series 2 on UK TV?

Fri Dec 26, 2008 5:24 pm
Does anyone know who, if and when the new series will be shown on UK TV - BBC 4 showed it last time, but it seems primed for a bump to BBC2 now! I've looked on the website but see no mention of it at all!
Can anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks

Just bumping this up to use as a thread for information about when we are likely to see Season 2 on UK TV.

Thanks to Jessica, a snippet from the NME about the songs being released on itunes:

iTunes UK will not be offering the same service when the series debuts in the country in April.

Source:

I read that as appearing on UK TV in April...

If I find any other information confirming this - I will post it here... Smile

Another FOTC UK TV prompt:

One Night Stand

16 Jan 2009, 22:00 on BBC Four

Hey Robbie Barnes - check your local listings for season 2 premiere dates in the UK. If you can wait, season 2 will be available in the summer of 2009!

Hopefully that's the dvd they're talking about....so far away! <img src=" title="Surprised" border="0"/>

It looks like it is definitely going to be on BBC4 again then.

I wonder why they haven't decided to upgrade it to BBC 2? Sad

[size=100:e9nsx8me]Conchords fly again for BBC Four

BBC Four is to screen the second series of the Emmy-nominated comedy Flight of the Conchords.

The show follows New Zealanders Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie as they try, with little success, to launch their folk music parody act in New York.

The cult programme, made by HBO, became a success on both sides of the Atlantic. An EP of music from the show won a Grammy in 2007.

Series two is already airing in America and will broadcast here in spring 2009.

The TV show started out as a radio show that Clement and McKenzie made for BBC Radio 2 in 2004.

Having picked up a Perrier award nomination at the Edinburgh Festival the year before, the pair worked with Rob Brydon and Jimmy Carr on a six part series which followed their search for success on London's music scene.

Production on series two of the television show was delayed by the writers' strike in Hollywood.

[size=100:600tv0if][size=150:600tv0if]Second season of hit comedy Flight Of The Conchords to transmit on BBC Four in Spring 2009
Date: 13.02.2009

The second season of Emmy-nominated comedy Flight Of The Conchords, which follows the lives of New Zealand's premiere digi-folk parodists Jemaine and Bret as they try and break New York, has been acquired by BBC Four for transmission in Spring 2009.

Music-comedy duo Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie return as the hapless musicians who have left their native New Zealand for New York's Lower East Side in a bid to create success for their band.

Over the course of the new season, Bret and Jemaine resort to a variety of unconventional strategies in an attempt to jump-start their lives and career, including: taking desperate measures to pay the bills;
starting up a gang;
and even dating an Australian – a taboo in New Zealand.

Their efforts rarely yield dividends but do spawn new tunes about life, love and the pursuit of an elusive music video.

Among the familiar faces rejoining Jemaine and Bret for the second season of Flight Of The Conchords are: Murray (Rhys Darby), who still works at the bare-bones New Zealand consulate and serves as their inept manager;
Mel (Kristen Schaal), their married, obsessive fan, and Doug (David Costabile), her long-suffering husband;
their friend Dave (Arj Barker), who works at a pawn shop and lives with his parents;
and Eugene (Eugene Mirman), their meddling landlord.

Among the guest stars in the new season are Seymour Cassel, Jim Gaffigan, Greg Proops and Kristen Wiig.

The first season of Flight of the Conchords transmitted on BBC Four to rave reviews and a fan-base that Bret, Jemaine and Murray could only dream of.

It received four Emmy nominations including Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series (James Bobin) and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series (James Bobin, Jemaine Clement, Bret McKenzie).

On securing the rights to the second season from HBO, Sue Deeks, BBC Head of Series Acquisition, says: "
The likeable naivety of the characters and their brilliantly comedic musical fantasy sequences make a winning combination and we are really looking forward to welcoming them back for season two!"

Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie first teamed up in 1998, performing briefly under the names Moustache and Vested Interest before becoming Flight of the Conchords.

Earning a worldwide cult following through their live performances, the duo was named Best Alternative Comedy Act at the 2005 US Comedy Arts Festival, and Best Newcomer at the Melbourne Comedy Festival, and was nominated for the Perrier Comedy Award at Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Flight of the Conchords released the live album Folk The World in 2002, and headlined a six-part BBC Radio 2 series, which won a Sony UK Comedy Award.

They made their HBO debut in 2005 on their own edition of stand-up comedy series One Night Stand.

In February 2007, Flight of the Conchords received the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album for their EP The Distant Future and last year their debut full album Flight Of The Conchords entered the US charts at number three and hit the UK top 40.

Flight Of The Conchords is co-created by James Bobin, Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie. The executive producers are Jemaine Clement, Bret McKenzie, James Bobin, Troy Miller and Stu Smiley;
co-executive producer, Tracey Baird;
consulting producer, Paul Simms.

The acquisition of the second season of Flight Of The Conchords is the latest in an impressive portfolio of hits for BBC Programme Acquisition.

In 2008 viewers enjoyed multiple award-winning drama Damages (BBC One), Mad Men (BBC Four), Australian comedy Summer Heights High and Family Guy (BBC Three), The Tudors (BBC Two) and Heroes (BBC Two/BBC Three).

This year heralds the second season of Damages on BBC One, the second season of Mad Men on BBC Four, volume four of Heroes (all transmitting in February) and season three of The Tudors later in the year.

So still no news on the start date? The only thing I've seen is that they're repeating One Night Stand on the 30th April at 10pm. I read somewhere that it could be starting mid May but that was just a rumour. Although it seems likely even though they announced it would be airing in April.

A little update. Well I've seen a BBC4 advert on TV of a clip of Season 2 with the words "
The Conchords Are Coming"
at the end which is good to see. I've also noticed a few late night episodes of FotC are set to be broadcast during early May, don't know if they're repeats of the first season before Season 2. [image] Gah it looks like Season 2 is gonna start right in the middle of my exam period, never mind! Smile

Sorry - I didn't realise it was on until halfway through when I was flicking through the channels. It will probably be repeated again soon - it seems to be on all the time.

Awww I found some 'blasts from the past' when searching the bbc website for this info.

Rhys DarbyJekyll and Hyde 2030

What is your show all about?

The classic story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde - set on board the first manned shuttle to Mars in the year 2030.

Where and when can we see it?

The Pleasance Attic every night at 7pm.

Do you love Edinburgh or is it a chore?

It's a bloody chore, but one that you love to do, like taking the milk bottles up to the gate, knowing you may catch a glimpse of the sexy girl living across the street. You try and time it right so you can catch her with her curtains open as she's getting changed for dinner. Then her father catches you looking and runs out onto his lawn...you freak out and make a scene... you're high on life.

What will you be doing with the other 23 hrs of the day?

Prancing around Edinburgh in my fine outfits, making out like I own the place... then I'll catch some amazing shows, like anything that has travelled a fair distance and that has dance in it. I'll also lie in the meadows and dream of a world without terror.

What's the best thing you've ever seen on the fringe?

The Flight of the Conchords... oh and one year i saw some gigantic giraffe puppets. They were talking to me in the meadows.

What's the worst thing you've seen?

A show called 'the cat must die' 2002.

What's the most curious thing that's happened to you in Edinburgh?

Climbing up Arthurs Seat at 5am with a strange girl and 3 bottles of red wine, it seemed to take hours, but when we finally got to the top I found one of my flyers stuck in a rock.. I picked it out and turned around to show it to the girl...but she was gone. I looked down the cliff and there she was running in the distance getting smaller and smaller, it must have been something I said...I then held the flyer above my head and danced on the rock.

If you could persuade one VIP to come to your show who would it be? Why?

Christian Slater because I loved him in 'Pump up the Volume'.

If the Edinburgh fairy could grant your wish, what would your wish for?

My own rocketship, nothing flash, just something with enough power to get me to the moon. Oh, and it'll need to have two seats - one for my babe Rosie.

What advice do you have for first time Edinburgh punters?

don't waste your time seeing stand-up shows. Go see something original. Go see someone who can perform more than 'jokes'. Look for physical comedy, mime and sound effects. It's the new rock n roll. And I'm leading the wave. Kia kaha.

Flight of the Conchords - Our Interview

Bret and Jemaine talk exclusively. Also, win their CD.

Can you introduce yourselves?

Bret: Jemaine gets called the big one. So by default I'm the small one without glasses.

Jemaine: I'm the cool one, but in a picture you'll probably think I'm the uncool one.

You two won the Perrier as folk singers, right? Isn't that for old men with beards and a fear of electricity?

Bret: We're not really folk singers. I sometimes have a beard. What we do is best described as musical comedy, but that sounds terrible. So we try to avoid describing what we do.

Jemaine: Electricity is essential when recording a radio series.

Why were you drawn to folk? Why not rap for example?

Bret: We have a rap song called The Hip-hop-o-potamus vs. the Rhyme-nocerous. Jemaine's the Hip-hop-o-potamus and I'm the Rhyme-nocerous.

Jemaine: We invented rap in New Zealand in 1998.

You're from New Zealand, right? Is folk big down there? How famous are you there?

Bret: We're from Wellington, New Zealand. It's the capital. It's a little bit like Brighton.

Bret: Folk music is not very popular here. There is one annual folk music festival but we haven't performed at it yet.

Jemaine: Yeah well it isn't really folk music.

Bret: On a scale of famousness that goes from one to ten, we're about a one and a half. Maybe a two once this CD comes out.

Jemaine: We would perhaps be as famous in New Zealand as some people who are really famous in Britain but no one has heard of in New Zealand. So not to drop names but in New Zealand we are as famous as Ant and Dec are in New Zealand. Which is not at all. We often tell people in Britain that we are big in New Zealand though because that either impresses them or makes them laugh.

When writing songs, do you use any of those 'mind-mapping' techniques for generating ideas?

Bret: We used 'post it' notes to help write the series for BBC. It was sort of a mind map but it could also stick to the wall.

Being in a band must be a great way to meet ladies?

Bret: It's not as good as the internet.

Is there any subject matter that Folk isn't appropriate for?

Bret: Folk music isn't that good for the dance floor. It's hard to get people bumping and grinding to some of our more folky jams.

Jemaine: Yes but like we said, we don't strictly do folk music. I'm starting to suspect that this isn't a proper interview and these questions were sent to us as an email and we just filled them out and sent them back.

You have a CD out (hence this interview and competition). What sort of stuff is on it?

Bret: It's a six-part radio series that we made for BBC2 last year. It follows the story of our band moving to the UK and trying to make it in the local novelty music scene. Each episode has a couple of songs and a bit of a story. We have guest comics like Daniel Kitson, Jimmy Carr and Nina Conte playing cameo roles and Neil Finn (from Crowded House) appears in each show.

Jemaine: I'm kind of disillusioned about this whole interview and won't be answering any more questions.

What can Flight of the Conchords fans look forward to next?

Bret: We're talking about updating our web site.

And they'll be showing the behind the scenes documentary (Flight of the Conchords: On Air) beforehand at 10.05pm.

And yes I watched One Night Stand again tonight too! [image]

So I got to see the last 15 minutes of ONS twice. That's just as good as seeing the whole show once right?
