Hallo-hallo! Empty Hallo-hallo!

Hi everybody! It's great to be here! Just wanted to say a little about myself so you'll know something...

Like all of you, I'm currently in love with Flight of the Conchords. Especially Jemaine. My friend Melissa has laid pretend claims to Bret and that's fine with me. <img src=" title="Razz" border="0"/>

I'm a cosmetology student, my favorite thing to do is haircolor and creative hairstyling. I've won two updo competitions, and I've found that you can mask a poorly-executed or simple updo by putting a lot of stuff, i.e. fake flowers and birds, on it and making it look cool. I also did makeup on Jackie, my model, which is another stong suit of mine. Someday I'll post the pictures if you want.

I'm a self-taught artist, specializing in painting and collages. If I had any spare canvas I'd currently be working on a picture of our boys... but I don't. Being broke sucks, no?

Favorite music: Bjork, Polly Jean Harvey, Nick Cave, Beck... I'd better stop or that list will get much, much longer. I have a lot of favorites.

Favorite book: "
American Gods"
by Neil Gaiman

Favorite movies: Shouldn't have put this here... Don't really know... Um... Lord of the Rings..?

Before I write the Next Great American Novel here, I'll bow out and just say that I can't wait to get to know you guys. Thanks for reading this far!

Okay so You have won me over, and you will for sure win over Haley aka thedistantfuture for liking Beck.

If you're feeling up for it, you can post your artworks in the FanArt section under Creative Arts (Non FOTC). I'm sure we'd all love to see them!
We're quite the arty bunch here, a regular bunch of Coco's, so you'll fit in fine!

It's great that you do hair and makeup. I'd love to see some pics. I'm a photographer myself, so i dabble in those things, but I'm no pro at all!

I'm Jessica by the way. Lovely to meet you!

in your post Jess <img src=" title="Very Happy" border="0"/>

Hi Earthintruder!!! I love that you love Nick Cave. Did you know he is on tour now, I am going to see him on Sept. 23rd -- Hooray!!!

I am from Atlanta originally, and used to spend A LOT of time in Athens back in the day. I think I am the least artistic person here, but really enjoy looking at art of all kinds, so I can't wait to see yours.

Welcome aboard and I will see you around the board Smile

Oh, wow... I feel at home already! Thanks you guys! I'll take pictures of my paintings and try to get my mom to send me her USB cord 'cause I think we got ours switched (our cameras are almost identical) and mine doesn't fit. It's great to be around like-minded people because my day-today life consists mainly of dealing with crap about my haircolor (it's red but it's been blue, purple, deep oceanic green, black, orange, and pink) and explaining things about my music. Translations of things not in English, defending my weird tastes, things like that...

On Karaoke Day at school, I burned a CD of stuff from my own collection to sing along with, mostly PJ Harvey because that's where my range is, and I ended up singing seven songs because I was the only one anyone thought was good (not to blow my own horn or anything, I usually just sing alone). It was scary because I knew nobody else would know the music and I wasn't sure how they'd take me screaming "
50-Foot Queenie"
over Jeff's PA system, but it was good fun.

I have some. But the ones I took when my hair was purple just came out blue because it was a very bluish shade. I have a great one from around Christmas when my hair was green. I think I took it before we drove over to Destin to see "
Sweeney Todd"
.

That was the color that got the most stares. I didn't get it... But my brother and I got in a serious car wreck and the cops, EMTs, and the nurses in the hospital (we had to go because my brother was under 18) all made fun of my green hair, black nails, and yellow, glittery eyeshadow. Whoop-dee-friggin'-doo. I'm such a freak, blah-blah-blah...

But when I was in Florida for three weeks this summer, visiting my friends and family, I got lots of compliments on my blue-and-purple hair, which made me happy. The girl at the Borders coffee shop said "
It looks almost like it's glowing!"

I know. People are stupid.
I teach at a kindergarten and the kids LOVE it.
I always get, "
Miss Jessica, Your hair is pink and purple. I liek it, it looks pretty!"

Children are so much more understanding.

And the way I see it, colour = life. I want people to look at me and go "
Hey, she's lively!"
, and not just pass me by like they would if I had my natural colour.

Seriously. If I want to ruin my hair (and I have a few times) stripping the color out of it again and again to go another color, that's my choice! I know how to fix it!

I don't know how long this red will last... It's permanent, but red dries your hair out if you do it too long because the color molecules are so big (scientific, I know!) so I'm thinking... violet by Thanksgiving.

Sounds good to me! My hair is completely stuffed from constant colouring and perming and bleaching. But like you said, nobody else has to deal with it, so thay shouldn't care.
But still, people stare like it's mad.

Perming is SO bad for your hair!

Let me explain... There are three kinds of chemical bonds that make up your hair. Salt, which is only broken by changes in pH, hydrogen, which is broken pretty much any time your hair gets wet and re-forms as it dries, and disulfide, the strongest of all three. Perm solution (ammonium thioglycolate, which I am HIGHLY allergic to and finally proved it to my instructors) breaks the disulfide bonds, and neutralizer helps to re-form the bonds that were broken, but in the shape of the perm rod.

So... if you put solution on someone's hair, let it process, and then yanked on one of the perm rods, even without a lot of rpessure, the hair would just stretch and then separate itself. It literally melts your hair.

Coloring also affects the outcome.

Hah yes I know.. I permed my hair once and my hair was like elastic for weeks. so now when I want the uber curls, I just use a shiiload of mousse and curlers.
I've learned my perming lesson (maybe..) but I'll never give up my colour!

Yeah. I never really cared about curly hair to begin with, so I never wanted one... But the first real one I had to do at school was on a woman who had hair down to her butt, and it had at one stage been a mullet. She wanted a spiral perm (pain in the ass) rolled on the 4th smallest rods (bigger pain in the ass) and kept asking if she could get her hair highlighted the day after. When I asked her why she was getting a perm, she said, "
Because my husband wants me to."

I could never wrap my head around the idea of doing something like that because someone else told you to.

Hi and welcome to the board! (yes I know I'm late, but I'm always late) ;<br />D

Glad you've made yourself at home.

Also, I've had "
odd"
hair colours in the past and yes. People are stupid. I have at time felt like saying "
it's just HAIR!"

hey earthy! nice to meet you!

i've never had "
crazy"
hair, but always kinda wanted to. alas, i'm from the midwest, one of the most out of the loop places in the frickin country. and i can only imagine the stares i'd get if i ever decided to go for a bright color! <img src=" title="Surprised" border="0"/> i don't see it happening anytime soon tho. i'm pretty sure the old folks at john deere corporate hq (<
--where i currently work) wouldn't take very kindly to it. <img src=" title="Razz" border="0"/>

aaanyway. i'd love to see some of your art as well! perhaps you've posted it already and i'm just slow. if so, i promise i'll get to it eventually. not having internetz for a week put me waaaaay behind on post-reading! gah! my remote artistic talents lie in performance art (mostly dance, you'll see me make lots of dancer nerd comments) which doesn't exactly post well in internet space. but whatevs...i'd be too embarrassed to share anyway.

anyway. welcome!!

p.s. i ramble a lot. <img src=" title="Razz" border="0"/>

No, I haven't posted it yet. I will next weekend. I'm about to go home, where there is no internet connection, but I spend every weekend at my dad's, so... Hopefully my USB cord will be here soon. I'll start taking pictures tonight.

HAI! I'm late too! I love hair colour and everything about it. when I was 13 I decided to dye my hair this copper red and everyone loved it...AND hated it...meaning my family <img src=" title="Razz" border="0"/> LOL...so after that I stuck with red because I just loved the way my face looked with it...and I've had every shade of it too...i think. (ok..maybe not red red...like primary red) anyway.

I too am creative. I bake and decorate cakes! you are welcome to look at my site (shameless plug there) oh! and I use to live in Ga! Fort Benning/Columbus...my husband was in the Army. so yea...those are the things we all having in common.

Ok...so we can call you Earthy...but I like real names! What's your given name? lol ;<br />D
