As a general rule, comedians are never that funny in real life. But when I meet Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie, the folk parody duo known as Flight of the Conchords, they're playing ping-pong with each other's punch lines. Could be the native New Zealanders are an exception to the rule, considering their stand-up act isn't your typical set-'em-up-and-shoot-'em-down routine. "
We just say, come see it,"
says Clement, flashing a mile-wide toothy grin. "
It sounds so bad when I describe it. Sometimes I don't even mention that it's comedy -- then people will think I'm in a proper band."
It's not that the concept is ridiculously elaborate. Onstage, they play, well, funny songs (one compares love to various desk supplies, another spins a tale about a mythical dragon named Albi who happens to be racist), pluck along on their acoustic guitars, and engage in straight-faced banter between numbers, taking themselves and the music deathly seriously -- which is exactly why it's so funny. Think Ricky Gervais meets John Mayer. Then clone it.
Now the guitar-slinging college buddies have relocated to New York City to translate their act into an HBO television series, debuting this month. Simply put, they play fictionalized, more hapless versions of themselves, only instead of aspiring comedians, they're penniless, wannabe rock stars. It's a plot point that conveniently allows them to break out n song, such as when Clement deems a woman at a house party "
the most beautiful girl in the room"
and, in a spontaneous music montage, croons along with McKenzie: "
You're so beautiful, you could be a part-time model / But you'd probably still have to keep your normal job."
Under the tutelage of Da Ali G Show codirector James Bobin, Conchords promises to be a high-minded gut-buster;
it relies on the pair's deadpan repartee a la The Office. "
My character on the show is very annoying,"
says Clement, laughing. "
He's an asshole and I'm an idiot,"
interjects McKenzie, not satisfied with his buddy's summation. "
And then sometimes we flip it around;
I'm an asshole and he's the idiot. That's pretty much the show's structure."
Proof smart humor doesn't have to be complicated.

Have I mentioned how much I love this thread? It's true: Bret/Jemaine is kind of my (internet) life, which comes as absolutely no revelation at all to the good folks who see me around LiveJournal. ♥
Anyway, ripped from the headlines of this very forum:
They're practically holding hands, you guys. If I had the initiative to Photoshop that about ten pixels closer...
This one pinged me "
boyfriendsboyfriendboyfriends"
unusually hard for reasons I couldn't quite figure out. And then it hit me: cover up the bottom half.

That whole video is pricelessly slashy, dude. Particularly that one scene where Jemaine is hanging out by the van, just watching Bret dance, and out of goddamn nowhere Bret slaps his (own) ass.
They started it, okay? They started it.
