[size=150:2zxp2kqu]REVIEW: Flight Of The Conchords In Melbourne!
15 July 2012

New Zealand folk-comedy duo Flight of the Conchords delighted their fans tonight at their long awaited and sold out show at The Plenary in Melbourne. This atypical auditorium style venue played host to a very entertaining evening of multiple genres of music including folk, rap and rock- the common thread being the witty lyricism for which Bret and Jemaine are adept.

Before FOTC took to the stage the audience was invited to take a trip to 'The Bark Side' with unbilled support act Arj Barker, an American stand up comedian who also played 'Dave' in the FOTC television series. Highlights of his set included his Owen Wilson impression and his version of the old 'build a bridge and get over it' adage, he prefers to tell people to 'get a deck of cards and deal with it'.

As much as the crowed were enjoying Arj, it wasn't long before he introduced the duo we were all here to experience live- Flight of the Conchords! The boys took to the stage and immediately broke into dance number 'Too Many Dicks (On The Dancefloor)"
- complete with boom-box speaker headpieces! This was followed by 'Robots' and a costume change (to spin their headpieces around revealing a futuristic silver side) for this post-apocalyptic ode to Y2K in the year 2000.

Tales of their crazy rock excess were also peppered throughout the show between songs. Rockstar moments included eating a complimentary muffin at a hotel, and getting stuck in an elevator because they didn't understand how it worked. Perhaps their most notable rockstar moment was an unfortunate incident involving Bret, Jemaine, a FOTC groupie and a fish. While the details were initially sketchy it was revealed later, during the encore song 'Back On The Road', that the boys "
left a hole in your soul, and a sole in your hole"
. Poor Mel!

During 'Bowie' the boys ripped their clothes off to reveal low-cut, sequined, skin-tight leotards that elicited much squealing from the audience. Accompanying Bret and Jemaine on stage for most of the evening was hirsute cellist Nigil Collins who also revealed a concealed sequined ensemble.

Feeling dejected the no one had heckled them to 'Show us your tits', Jemaine was quick to pounce on the heckler who 'Baaa-ed' like a sheep delightedly replying, 'We're going to f**k you later'. Good to hear he lives up to the Kiwi stereotypes!

The two-hour set delivered the star struck fans the chance to see many of their favourite songs live and the boys did not disappoint.

Matt's pictures are the best! On top of audio engineer, hair stylist, tour nanny, I've decided he's also the on-tour photographer.

[size=200:1staj8jj]Flight of the Lapdance Concert at Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne (15th July 2012)

Since it was a no recording/filming/photographing event, I’ll just try to summarise my experience on it.

A few months back, I found out Flight of the Conchords are to have an Australian Tour. Yes, Flight of the Conchords, in Melbourne. I waited patiently online on the ticket sale day for 14th of July concert, the Plenary. Unfortunately, it was sold out in about a few minutes flat.

However, having heard that due to popular request, they are to set up another concert at Rod Laver Arena the day after. This time I told myself I would just try my luck with Carlton Newsagency. I arrived 10 mins early, told the man I wanted two tickets. The guy got me front row seats, right in the middle. I kid you not: Row A, seat 23 and 24. What a bro.

I thought about the purchase for a second. None of my friends here know of the band - only one from the UK, who introduced them to me. I am not true to the series, but I love their songs and concluded their live versions are much preferred.

It will be the first live musical concert I’ll see in Melbourne. Second in my whole life.

I am not a person of concerts. No too big in catching celebrities either. Do I regret it? On the days leading up to it, on the night itself?

No. Not at all. First of all, Arj Barker was brilliant as supporting act. I must admit stealing some of his jokes to impress my friends with puns. After his 15 minutes in the spotlight, he left us in the dark. Everyone knew who they were waiting for next

They came in with ‘Too Many D*cks on the Dancefloor’, with boxes over their heads and bright lights flashing everywhere– the most unexpected openings to any concerts I’ve ever seen. Then they flip their boxes around and performed ‘Humans are Dead’, which is one of my favourites. But then they took their robotic suits off, reduced to Jemaine and Bret in the flesh – can it be any more than just a brilliant start? Oh, they were just warming up. With ‘Jenny’, ‘Business Time’, ‘Most Beautiful Girl in the Room’, ‘Hurt Feelings’ and a couple of added jokes to tell. We also did a sing-along, where they orchestrated the whole arena to sing different lines and combine them together.

Just when you thought, ‘Hey, that was a really nice sentiment’, they stripped down in front of the crowd to these absolutely appalling shiny tights, to bring us ‘Demon Woman’. Teas were spilt, chairs were pushed down, guitars had fingers pointed at. Absolutely wild.

Though, they did come back as they were before (as if nothing ever happened) to perform a couple more. ‘Back on the Road’ wrapped the whole concert perfectly;
it almost brought tears to our eyes. My jaws ached from laughing 3 hours straight. I love it. I fell in love with it. Seriously, no words could actually properly express how amazing it was. I still can’t believe I had the privilege to stare up their flaring nostrils.

To tell you the honest truth, I got more than what I paid for. In the finale, they climbed down and interacted with the fans – in a rather suggestive way. While Bret bounced all over the stage with the mic, Jemaine climbed down the stage and walked towards the nearest front row seat. He walked to mine and did me a lap dance - a full 2 minute thrust in front of me while I awkwardly tried to keep a straight face. They also brought another fan nearby upfront, but by the time they pulled her nearby stage, they called security - blaming her on a bieber-glomp attempt.

Now that was absolutely priceless. I am scarred for life, AND I had a blast!

:#evilgrin#: Indeed! Surprised

I have to wonder to if it really was "
a full two minutes"
, or if she was just referencing Business Time there. Both Bret and Jemaine tend to go around the stage/audience during Sugalumps.

Overall this was just a fantastic show that I really wish I could have illegally video-taped, because the funniest bits were new material. Hopefully a DVD release is imminent.
