If this second season is supposed to be [image] bad [image] then how come i like it so much?

And i have GREAT taste!

I will now end this post by quoting one of my all time favorite shows.

"
Heres to those who wish us well, and those who don't can go to hell"

Guys, I had to defend the heck out of them in a Facebook status argument that was started by the guy who introduced me to the guys! I never thought he'd turn on them, but he said he was "
not excited"
to see the episodes week to week like he was last year. No one agreed with him, of course, but I was the most "
vocal"
I must say.

People are so unforgiving when it comes to reviewing comedy. I don't get it. [image]

That's because they wish they could be just as funny.

I feel no ill will towards the guys for not including Bus Driver's Song in the episode.

The entire episode WAS Bus Driver's Song. Even though I was a little nervous/disappointed I still like the way they did it and don't even care if they do a newer version because the original is PERFECTION.

I also think there's a lot of snobbery that's involved with just about any genre of entertainment. It's like, they enjoy the first season of something, but they're pretty much expecting the second season to fail and so it does in their eyes: a case of seeing what they want to see. I dunno, I could be totally wrong on this, but with just about anything else, there's always that group of people with that nasty "
Oh, I only liked them before they were popular"
attitude. Granted, some media are definitely at their best in the early stages and massively plummet downhill in the later stages, but there's no need to get so nasty about it, and I certainly don't think FotC has gone downhill.

I think it's because they're too busy examining things like narrative structure instead of just ... you know ... laughing.

Amen.

I've never stopped liking anything just because it turned popular. Where it does make my chances of ever getting front row seats much smaller, I get hear and see MORE of them on a regular basis, which makes me happy...happy...happy! And no WAY have they gone downhill. They have stayed true to who they are creatively and personally as far as I can tell and as humble as can be. You'd think they were playing open mics and coffee houses, certainly not selling out 4,000 plus seat arenas.

Also, there's something gratifying about getting all of my friends into them prior to their HBO fame. If nothing else, it proves that I have excellent taste. ;

well, i think the main reason most people who say the second season has declined is because it's lost a lot of it's original charm that tuned people into the show in the first place, and is now evolving into something new. i, for instance, miss the low-budget look, the less epic music videos, the folkier sounding music and constant dead-pan conversations (most of which were heavily improvised) that were all so heavy last season. it's certainly not a bad season and it's still one of the only decent comedies worth watching today. it just aint no season one in my eyes! hey, but to each their ow [image]

I didn't see that! But I'm sure he looks downright sixy with it. I'm convinced he can pull off any look. But I've only seen this episode the once so I have yet to go back for my "
fine-toothed-comb"
viewings...

But this is where the boys are damned if they do and damned if they don't. If the show didn't evolve then people would complain that it was just the same shii over and over. If they try and do things a little differently, people complain that it's not the same as it used to be. [image] I really think that it's a no win situation for them, and to be honest that bums me out a little.

I love season one and I think it was pretty close to perfect. With a couple of exceptions, I've also enjoyed the hell out of season two. Yes, it's different, but different doesn't have to equal bad. I do miss the low-budget home made look of the season one episodes. :'( I'd love to know why they decided to go with a different look this time around. I don't think the music videos (other than Fashion is Danger) are really much flashier this time around. I've really liked the videos this season except for Demon Woman which I thought was dreadful. The Magnolia-esque Hurt Feelings video is my favorite moment of the entire series. I think overall the songs were stronger in season one, but I still think they've done a good job with the songs this year, and I feel that it's a bit unfair to compare given how long they had to perfect the songs they used in season one. If we'd gotten season one just a few months after they'd written Robots, Business Time, If You're Into It, Bowie, or Albi, I wonder if people would still love them as much as they do or if they'd be a bit "
meh"
about the season one songs as well.

In the "
On Air"
documentary Stu Smiley describes all of the work that Bret & Jemaine had to do for season one as, "
a superhuman task for unreasonable expectations which they delivered on."
And that was when they had a back catalogue of songs and storylines to work with already and almost no expectations from the public. Season two couldn't have been any easier on them, and I feel like they've mostly delivered.

Right on, Sam! [image]

And this in particular:

I'm truly awestruck by how much they do to create the show. They are the lead actors, producers, writers (even on the scripts written by other people - they've said in interviews that they work with those other writers to some extent - it's not like B & J are handed a finished script without being involved in the process). We know they have a hand in the editing. They write all the music & lyrics and play a good deal of the instruments themselves. They must have a certain degree of involvement in the look of the show, including costumes (remember that interview with them commenting on the costumes for "
Freaky"
?).
They obviously have a talented and hard-working staff that makes sure their ideas are translated to the screen, but the amount of work they do themselves is really mindblowing. Smile
